Free import landed cost calculator
Cost one product or shipment, with no sign-in. It works for any destination: start with the global setup and enter the rules for your country, or load a preset as a starting point.
Product and shipment details
Purchase cost + international freight + insurance = CIF, the starting value used by customs.
Name any jurisdiction — the rules below stay fully editable.
Units you will actually sell from this shipment.
2–10 digits. Dots and spaces are fine.
Enter at least 2 digits to look the code up in the HS 2022 nomenclature.
National 8–10 digit wording varies by customs jurisdiction. Copy the exact line your destination authority publishes.
Your destination customs source — separate from the UN HS reference.
The first six digits of an HS code are internationally harmonised. Longer 8–10 digit codes, duty rates, origin treatment, rebates and exemptions are set by the destination country. TrueCost never assigns a duty rate from an HS code — record the official tariff line, its source and the date you verified it.
All figures use one currency.
Needed only for weight-based excise.
Needed only for volume-based excise.
- Start with the global setup and enter the rules for your destination: duty base, tax base, tax rate and any levies.
- The global pattern is duty on CIF, then tax on customs value + duty + included levies — adjust every element to match your country.
- Confirm the tax base and every rate against your destination's official tariff before committing to a price.
Duty, VAT / GST and customs rules
Every rate is editable. Nothing is assumed from the HS code.
South Africa uses 10%. Set 0 where no uplift applies.
Leave off unless your destination explicitly taxes these.

No excise or levy rules yet. Add as many as the destination requires — combined excise is simply more than one rule.

How this calculator works
The calculator follows the same sequence customs authorities use, and it shows every intermediate figure so you can check it against your own paperwork.
- CIF = goods value + international freight + insurance.
- Customs duty = duty base × your product duty rate. The base is CIF in most countries, and the goods value alone in the United States.
- Excise and levies are separate rules. Each can be a percentage of a base you choose, a specific amount per item, kilogram, metric ton, litre or gallon, or a fixed amount — with an optional minimum and maximum.
- Import VAT or GST = your tax rate × the base your destination uses. The global starting pattern is customs value + duty + included excise and levies. Broker and trucking charges are not taxed unless your destination says so.
- Total landed cost = CIF + duty + excise + levies + VAT/GST + clearing and delivery costs. Divide by sellable units for landed cost per unit.
- Profit per unit = selling price − landed cost per unit − selling cost per unit. Margin is profit per unit ÷ selling price.
